Mildred B. Collins

Mildred Brockman Collins died peacefully Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Westminster Canterbury in Charlottesville, Virginia. Mildred was born September 30, 1916, in Louisa County, daughter of the late Samuel Asa Brockman and Irene Hiter Brockman.

Mildred married Cecil T. Elam of Trevillians in December of 1941; they made their home in
Arlington, Virginia. She was employed in Washington, D.C. for the Treasury Department, Bureau of Public Debt. She and Cecil were active members of Westover Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia. Upon retiring in 1973 they moved to the Elam family home place in
Trevillians. For the next few years they enjoyed restoring and renovating the old home. In 1984,
Cecil died of a sudden heart attack.

During her retirement she enjoyed growing beautiful Iris gardens and other flowers. She was an active member of Louisa Baptist Church, the Women's Club of the Blue Ridge, and the Historical Society of Louisa.

In 1987 Mildred married Roy W. Collins, a member of her church family and a childhood friend and former Treasurer of Louisa County. Roy and Mildred enjoyed their senior years together serving their community and their Church. In 1997 Roy passed away after a short illness.

In 1997 Mildred sold her beautiful house and moved to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She lived a very independent and active life until January of
2009 when she had a stroke. The staff at Westminster Canterbury, Health Care 2 is to be commended for their excellent care of this fine lady in the last year of her life.

Mildred was preceded in death by her brothers; Samuel H. and Kenneth Brockman, and her sister Kathleen Rosson. She is survived by nieces, nephews, a number of great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at Woodard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Russell K. Jurek at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Louisa Baptist Church followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa County, Virginia.
